Baseball tournament packing list and tips

Tournament weekends mean long days, several games and a lot of waiting. A good packing list and a plan for food, shade and rest makes it easier for everyone.

For the player

  • Glove, bat, helmet and cleats, labeled with the player's name.
  • Two uniforms or extra shirts, extra socks and a hat.
  • Batting gloves, if used, and a protective cup.
  • Catcher's gear if applicable.
  • A small bag for the dugout.

For the family

  • Folding chairs, a pop-up canopy or shade, and a blanket.
  • Sunscreen, bug spray, hats and sunglasses.
  • Rain jackets or ponchos.
  • A phone charger or battery pack.
  • Cash in case of entry fees or concessions.
  • A basic first aid kit and any medications.

Food and water

  • A big cooler with ice and plenty of water. Kids should drink regularly, not just when thirsty.
  • Simple snacks that keep: fruit, sandwiches, pretzels, granola bars. Avoid heavy meals right before a game.
  • Pack for the whole day, since concessions can be slow or expensive.

Know the schedule and the rules

  1. Check the bracket and game times, and arrive early.
  2. Read the tournament's rules, including pitching limits. See pitch count rules.
  3. Keep a running pitch count if your child pitches. Several games in a weekend add up.
  4. Check the weather and field closures the morning of each day.

Between games

  • Find shade, have players rest and rehydrate.
  • Keep throwing light. Avoid extra throwing for pitchers, see arm care.
  • Have quiet activities for siblings.
  • Keep it positive. Win or lose, kids remember how the weekend felt.

Heat

On hot days take extra breaks in shade, give plenty of fluids and watch for signs a child is not feeling well, such as dizziness, headache or unusual fatigue. If you're concerned, stop and get help.
